MEDELLIN, FROM WORLD’S MOST DANGEROUS CITY TO AN INNOVATION HUB
Medellin is a city where creativity has always been in the center and has recently opened itself. Thanks to recent actions from all actors, the ecosystem is generating worldwide curiosity. Undoubtedly the ecosystem that has shown the most impressive rise in the last decade, even though this is relative to its initial position.
Indeed, Medellin has changed in less than twenty years from the most violent city in the world to a leading innovation hub in Latin America that generates curiosity on a worldwide scale. Historically known as a trading city, textile and steel used to be exported in high amount from there. Its location is not, however, strategic as the city is surrounded by moutains with thick forest and thus hardly accessible by overland routes.
As claimed by Ruta N, it is relevant to develop the city as an innovation hub. The public initiative launched several programs that foster economic development through science, technology and innovation. All in all, capital, infrastructures and assistance is provided to young talents developing their start-up. As universities go in that way and sensitise talents, many are eager to benefit from this environment and take a step toward entrepreneurship.
Medellin nowadays takes advantage of its position as a recent and hopeful start-up ecosystem that interests worldwide actors. It is now time to keep going on this tremendous growth and confirm the potential it has in order to strengthen the environment by attracting talents and investors and a bigger scale.

As surprising as it could seemafter such an impressive growth and proposals from several VC funds, the owners decided not to raise money and let the start-up grow gradually thanks to its sustainibility. Thus, they are waiting for the right moment that would make sense for a higher investment.
Alegra allows SMEs to set up an API from their platform in order to manage all administrative tasks : invoice, payment, bank account, CRM, inventory. In order to bring efficiency to the management, the platform also provides analytic reports. Several services from this kind are being created in the area, which sets competition to Alegra. Nevertheless, the start-up is the only being implanted on such a wide geographical area.
